Where's The Beef on Anchor Milk? Monday, February 25, 2002: Where’s the Beef? By Miguel Medel, MD MPH The management of the New Zealand Milk (Philippines) Inc., the sole distributor of the Anchor, Anmum, Anlene and U-Care milk products in the Philippines is guilty of withholding information from the public regarding the true state of its products. Mr. Jose Ventuna de Guzman, NZMP’s National Manager admitted under intense questioning in an exclusive interview with the consumer watchdog, Health Watch Philippines over dinner at the Whistles’ Stop Restaurant in Libis, Quezon City recently. It was also noted that during the Dioxin scare a few years ago wherein milk products that were thought to be contaminated with high levels of Dioxin especially those coming from Europe were pulled out from the shelves and banned by the Food and Drug Authority in the Philippines with the exception of milk products coming from Australia and New Zealand who went on to profess that their milk products are Dioxin-free. Subsequent investigation conducted by several consumer groups both local and abroad however belied their claims. At present, the makers of Anchor, Anmum, Anlene & U-Care milk products are undergoing intensive research on the difference between natural cow’s milk and milk products from cloned cows and its effect on humans on its state of the art laboratory facility in Wellington, New Zealand. This was learned from documents recently released to the public by the New Zealand Dairy Board banning these milk products from cloned cows to be sold in New Zealand and other Commonwealth countries. Further documents obtained by Health Watch Philippines from its sources showed that these milk products from cloned cows are being exported to third world countries including the Philippines since November 1999. In this connection, we demand an explanation from the management of New Zealand Milk Philippines regarding the status of its milk products that are being sold in the country. We demand that all milk products coming from cloned cows be pulled out from the Philippines. We demand that they obtain a certificate from the New Zealand Dairy Board declaring that all its milk products are safe and fit for human consumption.
